Expedition Edition 4: Chefchaouen and Tangier, Morocco

Our journey continued on a new continent (Africa), as Maggie and I ventured across the Strait of Gibraltar on a ferry from Tarifa to Tangier. The ferry ride was only about an hour, and most of it was spent in line to get our passports stamped. Once we landed though, our stay in Tangier was not but a minute as we were whisked away to the mountains and the town of Chefchaouen.

Chefchaouen, AKA the Blue City or the Blue Pearl of Morocco, is a beautiful town known for being painted mostly blue. There appears to be some disagreement as to why it's painted blue, but I think it probably happened by coincidence. All jokes a side, Chefchaouen really lends itself to some nice pictures, especially the two of Maggie in front of a blue wall and green (blue adjacent) door.

Chefchaouen was also a great place to go for a little hike. The Mosquée Bouzâafar (or the Spanish Mosque) provided several excellent opportunities for some pictures of the city. A couple of those are in the photos below.

Our hotel was my favorite so far on this trip. If you have an interest in visiting Cherfchaouen, I highly recommend staying at Casa Perleta. The views from the rooftop were stunning, the staff was kind and helpful, and the breakfasts were top notch. It's also located in the Medina (old, walled area) of the city, which is a maze, but we eventually figured out our way around it just in time to leave.

We then came back to Tangier for a night, mostly to be near an airport, but did a little exploring as well (very little, since I wasn't feeling 100%). We did however get a nice meal, a couple of good views, a rooftop drink, and visited the Tangier American Legation Museum, where we learned that Morocco was the first nation to recognize the United States of America in 1777. That's important stuff!

Overall, if you like cats and confusing mazes of cities, Morocco is the country for you. Next stop is Paris, which Maggie and I have been there three times already, 'cause it's grrrrreat!
